A Husband, His Wife, & Late Night Giggles

It was the middle of the night and Husband and I were in bed. I was sound asleep; he was lying next to me, quietly thinking, as is his way sometimes. At any rate, a noise startled both of us (it woke me up and broke his train of thought) and for some reason, it was flat out HILARIOUS. Try as I might to block it out and go back to sleep, I got a case of the giggles instead. What didn't help was that my husband started laughing too, and making jokes about the situation.

So there we were, giggling, laughing, and whispering like crazy. I was worried that we might wake the children because we were laughing so much! My husband isn't one that always knows how to laugh quietly. And anyone that knows him will tell you that his laugh alone will make you want to laugh, too--even if you don't know what he's laughing about. We were in pretty bad shape!

It took about 10-15 minutes or so before we could gather ourselves enough to stop all of the fun we were having. We finally went to sleep, and had a peaceful night's rest. That night's fun and laughter made me think of this:

 So. True. :o)

Wisdom (& A Laugh) From The 5 Year Old

At lunch today, my son looks over at me, with all sincerity on his face, and warns me. . .

J.R.: "Mommy, don't ever eat grass!!!"

Me: "Okay. . .don't eat grass?!"

J.R.: "Yes, because it tastes bad and it can choke you!"

Me: (Silently wondering how he knows this and weighing what my response should be...)

J.R.: "Yeah, I used to eat it," he says, as he gazes out of the patio door, looking upon the backyard, where I'm certain this experience has taken place.

Me: (Trying so hard to keep a straight face because he's so serious. I'm struggling not to fall out of my chair with laughter!!)

LOL!!!

HILARIOUS

Gotta love these years!

A Simple Blessing, A Great God

I had a concern, something that was bothering me, just a little bit.

You see, my husband and I agreed that a certain purchase needed to be made, but he hadn't yet given me the "green light" to go ahead and make the purchase.

My husband is a man of his word, so I knew he would give me the green light, but I didn't know when.

Well, a bit of impatience began to creep up. I would think to myself, making the purchase now would benefit me in these ways. . . and I would ramble out a long list of why now was better. So when talking to myself wasn't enough (don't laugh, you know you do it, too!! LOL), I began to "motivate" my husband. You know, little comments here and there, just in case he forgot--translation: I was beginning to get on his nerves! (Never a good idea, Ladies!!)

So, I had a different conversation with myself. Stacie, just because Husband isn't "reacting" to the delay in the purchase, doesn't mean that he doesn't understand the importance of it. Stacie, have you gone to God to help you be patient in the time of waiting???

Well, I went to God and told Him all of what I was feeling. . .several times. . .especially when I wanted to "remind" my husband about the purchase. Well guess what??? Not only did my Heavenly Father give me patience, but He also reminded me that there was work on my part that needed to be done: Stacie, have you finalized the items to be purchased? If your husband asks you right now what the final cost would be, would you be able to give him an answer?

Mmm. In other words, before I go around reminding others what needs to be done, I need to be about my own business first! So, I set to work on doing my part. I still had moments when I wanted to remind my husband, but quickly remembered that before I opened my mouth, I should continue my work and continue to pray.

Well, what do you know! In a random conversation today, Husband gave me the green light!!! But the part that's even more amazing than that is the way God blessed my efforts. You see, I am not perfect. I didn't even get all of "my part" completed. But, I got a good chunk of it finished and because of the Holy Spirit's power, I managed not to nag my husband.

God blessed my efforts! I tried to do it His way and He finished the rest, which reminds me of the Scripture: ". . .being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;" (Philipians1:6

What a loving Father, Who gives me good things even when I don't deserve it, Who works in my favor in exchange for all of my worries. What a model for parenting. . . blessing my children for their faithful efforts, for giving it a try.

From My Dad to Me

My dad left this note for me on my Facebook page. Now normally, one would say that writing a note by hand implies that the person took extra time and care to send a heartfelt message. I mostly agree with that, but for my Dad, the opposite is true. He's not the most savvy person when it comes to computers, and he types with his index fingers only (lol!). Writing a note and dropping it in the mail would have been much easier for him. So, this note on Facebook means the world to me!

"Today I sit and reflect. When you were just a little girl, less than two years old, you got out of your bed in the middle of the night, came into our bed room, put your little hand on my face and gently shook me until I responded. With those beautiful brown eyes looking at me you said, "Daddy are you happy?" I replied, "Yes, Stacie, I am happy." You then said, "I am happy too." With that being said, you turned and went back to your room and to sleep. That was over 31 years ago and you still make me happy. I am so proud of you. . . . my little girl, his wife, and their mother. Truly a Proverbs 31 wife. Love Dad"

Isn't that sweet?! I told my dad that my eyes immediately became "allergic" to the computer screen--in other words, I teared right up. I'm so blessed to have a dad that continues to affirm and support me.

My dad is wonderful.

Frugal: Foundations and Future

Okay, let's get something straight right off the bat, my husband is WAAAAYYYYY better at handling the finances than I am. Budgeting was an unknown word until I met him. I was just glad to be able to meet monthly bills--life seemed great!! He, on the other hand, had more vision, more forward thinking. "Stacie," sweet Husband says to me, "we should work on paying our bills off, not just meeting the monthly payments. We also want to save up and budget what we will spend." Say what?!?!?!

I must say that 11 years ago, at the beginning of our marriage, that did NOT sit well with me at all, considering the financial hardships I encountered as a young girl. After all my childhood experiences, life was good in my book if you could pay your bills on time and then go and buy whatever you wanted with the money left over. At any rate, I did not fully submit to the vision, the purpose, the cause, my husband's wishes. . .whatever you want to call it. I didn't "get it" and I fought. . .HARD.

Now, I didn't make any "crazy" purchases, I didn't go get into any debt, I didn't go and buy something without my husband's approval. But in my heart--I was so not on board!! I didn't spend my money wisely all the time and I learned many, many tough lessons.

Fast forward through many tears, through the Lord growing me up, through the Lord opening my eyes to understand my husband's vision, through my husband's words, his example, his teaching me. . .fast forward and I'm beginning to see God's hand in it all.

If I had not learned to live modestly when we were a 2-income household, how much harder it would be when I stopped working to stay at home. If I had not learned to live modestly when it was just my husband and me, how much harder it would have been to raise 4 children on one income. Why did I fight so much? Sometimes I wish I could rewind and do it again.

But God is so good and kind and gracious. He's shown me what obedience to Him, by submitting to my husband, can do. The Lord has shown me how to trust in Him when He gives my husband a vision that I don't understand. The Lord is showing me the legacy that will be left to our children: one that says spending lavishly does NOT denote love or one's worth; one that says from the heart is better than any pricey gift there ever is; one that says earthly treasures can never measure up to the eternal treasure that awaits us.

God has given me strength and resolve to resist temptation to spend outside of our means and I am so pleased to be able to honor my husband in this way. {I don't think I could have uttered even half of this sentence years ago!!}

I apologize for the rambling of thoughts. This was just on my heart!

A Snake and My New Best Friend

So, the kiddos and I were in the back yard, tending to our vegetables. I thought I was so cool and clever, because I was able to double gardening with a science lesson for the day. We had been discussing plant life and various bugs that were helpful or harmful to gardens. I thought, "I'm going to round this lesson out with lettuce picking. I'll show them those big, fat juicy green caterpillars that eat little holes in the lettuce. We'll talk about the way God made those caterpillars green so that they blend so well with the lettuce." I just knew this was going to go so smoothly.

So, there we were picking lettuce. Every thing is going great! As is my habit, I let the dogs eat any leaves that are a little wilted or yellowing on the edges. They love it and think lettuce picking is really treat time for them. Well, while we're discussing the bugs we were finding, one of our dogs begins to run over to a corner of the yard and back to me . . .he keeps doing this, back and forth, with a bark each time. Now mind you, this little dog of ours isn't my 1st choice in a companion, and honestly he irks me most days. But he stays because my daughter would be heartbroken without him.

Anyway, I ignored him because he sometimes barks randomly at any and everything. So there I am talking bugs and plants, when my oldest daughter says, "Mommy, I don't know why Wimbley keeps barking. Maybe he wants you to give him more lettuce." I'm like, yeah probably so. So when I turn to offer him another piece, I see him run to the corner of the yard to bark at something. So I'm like, what is he barking at this time.

I go a little closer, and my first thought is, "Is that a vacuum hose? Why would my husband leave a vacuum hose curled up in the corner of the yard?" My next thought (very brief next thought) was what type of yard equipment would require a hose??? Then it clicks, "Stacie, you are staring at a black snake that is all coiled up." I do NOT tolerate snakes AT ALL, so in my head I screamed, "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

But to my children I said, "Everybody inside now! Everybody inside now!" I didn't yell and scream and kick and run the way I wanted to, but my point was clear. They all went inside without a word. When we got inside, I was shaking and completely outdone by the nerve of a snake to show up in my back yard!!!! My daughter told me, "Mommy, I didn't know why you told us to go in, but when I heard your voice, I thought there could be danger." (Later, my mom told me that what my daughter said reminded her of the Scripture that says, "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." -John 10:27) Thankful for children who obey (most of the time)! :)

Well, a few panicky hours later, and after a phone call to animal control, I know now that the "Black Snake" is apparently not harmful or poisonous, and is common in our area (although we've lived here for 7 years and this is our first encounter). Apparently, this snake is good for catching field mice and the like. I also now know that it was apparently coming out to warm itself in the sun, which is apparently normal this time of year. All of these "apparent" facts don't make me like the snake any more, and I never want to see it again, but at least the panicky shakes are gone. And eventually, one day, the kids can go outside to play again, eventually. LOL!!! I can laugh at myself now, especially the part when I asked myself, "Is that a vacuum hose?!" LOL!!!!

Meanwhile, I have forgiven Wimbley of all his "irk-iness." He's now welcome to stay in the family. Although I now know my fear of the snake was "apparently" unwarranted, I am so glad Wimbley was there to warn us. I know that he will try to protect us. . .even me, the one who has never really been too fond of him. Wimbley, my new best friend!!! ;)

Words For Baby 4

I don't know your name, but I think of you, wonder about you.

Today at lunch, I started singing, "He's got the whole world in His hands, He's got the whole world in His hands. . ." Your brother and sisters joined in.

I had your baby brother in my arms.

I looked at him and sang, "He's got the little, bitty babies in His hands. . ." and by the time I sang those words again, all I could think of was you...the little, bitty baby I never held in my hands.

Most times when I think of you, I have to fight the tears away. Many times, I lose the battle.

But this time, singing about you being in His hands--there was a sense of peace.

I always knew that, but today, peace instead of pain, confirmation instead of confusion. (Thank You, Father.)

Rest comfortably in His hands, baby.

Love,

Mommy

I am Reminded. . .

The passing away of singer Whitney Houston has been in the news very heavily over the course of the past week. I am reminded of her beautiful voice and her musical talent, which were truly gifts from God. . .

What makes my heart heavy is not only her death, but the way she struggled, both privately and publicly. . .knowing that God wanted better for her, as He does for all of us. . .I pray for her sweet daughter and dear mother, and the family she leaves behind.

Watching her funeral today, I am reminded of my life, my gifts, my talents, my struggles, my pain. I am reminded that I serve an all-knowing, ever-loving God who wants what is best for me and stands ready, with open arms, to forgive me every. time. I. fail.

I am so thankful to God, for His blessings toward us are great.

I am also reminded of this very important verse in the Holy Word of God:

But seek first the kingdom of God

and His righteousness,

and all these things shall be added to you.

-Matthew 6:33(NKJV)

Oh dear God, may our hearts seek You first,

Not fame, not fortune, not praise, not perfection,

Not man's ideals or standards,

Not worldly values or treasures.

But may we seek You first,

May we seek to do Your will,

May we strive to live by Your Holy Word,

So that we have no fear for tomorrow.

In the precious Name of Jesus I pray,

Amen.

Let it Snow. . . in October?

Yes, my dear friends, it's snowing where I live!

None of us can believe our eyes. . .after a morning of cold wind and rain, the snow is now falling.

A view of the snow through my kitchen window.

The kids want to go outside and play in it. . . I'm thinking NOT!! Especially since everything is so wet and muddy from hours and hours of rain before the snow.

Well, when it snows around here, there's one thing I like to do. . .get some baking done.

Off to the kitchen I go to make some type of baked apple dessert dish. . .we'll see!

New Glasses

This post is completely random. . .but I can't believe my boy is in glasses now!

He's only 4! He looks so daper. . .LOL

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. I wear glasses, my brother wears glasses, my mother wears glasses, my husband's father and brother wear glasses, and of course, my oldest daughter wears glasses. . .

SJ with her new purple glasses, per her request!

(Look at the concentration

on my son's face in the background. . .

they were playing a video game!)

She's been wearing them since she was 6. So, I guess I thought I had a couple of more years before anyone else needed them.

Guess not!! :o)

Remain Steadfast

Dearest Sisters,

If it doesn't stand in the Light of God's Word, then we cannot say that we accept it as truth or reality.

It doesn't matter how heartfelt it may sound, it doesn't matter how much we "understand," it doesn't matter how much it is accepted by others.

What matters is what God says.

And if we are unsure about whatever is being presented to us--whatever messages are being thrown our way--then go to the Word of God. Search the Scriptures and pray for wisdom. If you still feel unsure, then please, make no statements on the matter until you know what God's Word says.

I'm not talking about matters in which we have freedom in Christ--like singing traditional hymns vs. contemporary praise songs. I'm talking about matters that are central to our faith, who we are as Christians, how we represent God and His character; how all of that is reflected in our lives as women, wives, mothers.

We tread on very dangerous ground when we are 1) unsure of our thoughts and positions, 2) we listen to things that are not founded in the Word of God, and 3) make bold statements about these things. We must be careful because people are listening to us, watching us, and sometimes emulating us. The reality is that we have to do our best, through the power of the Holy Spirit, not to cause someone else to stumble, or cause others to stray away from the Truth of Jesus Christ, found in the Word of God.

Trust me, I know no one is perfect, I certainly am not. But that doesn't mean that we can't encourage each other to strive for that goal--perfection in Jesus Christ. Our human imperfections don't mean that we give up, give in, turn a blind eye or simply accept the lies that may come our way. We have to focus on the Truth.

We must remember who brings confusion, doubt, uncertainty, lies--the evil one. Confusion and disorder are not of God, not at all. We must guard our hearts, our minds and our homes because satan is busy, seeking to stir up trouble in whatever way he can.

Trust God, seek Him, study His Word and do not waver!

In His love,

Stacie

Lights Are Back On

So, I know this is such a random post. But, we've been without power for a couple of days (hurricane Irene!) and we are thrilled for it to be back on. I know that there are those who have gone without power for much longer than that, so I am not being insensitive or unrealistic. But every now and then, you have to celebrate the small victories. SO GLAD!

Post to come soon on our first day of school. . .with no lights!

Earthquake!!

A beautifully, gorgeous day outside. Bright pretty sunshine, a cool breeze, every thing is just lovely. My Husband and I were out in our school room, trying to prepare. . .sitting on the floor, putting a shelf together, nice conversation. My sweet children, working very hard today, were bringing schooling materials back and forth to be put away.

The LORD reigns,
let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
let the earth shake. . .

Out of nowhere, the dog wakes up and begins to growl. We're like, what's bothering her? Then the ground begins to tremble, then shake, then rumble. My husband and I look at each other, and I'm like, do you feel that? Do you hear that? He says, it's an earthquake! The kids!! The kids were in the house, upstairs, the trees are swaying, the satellite dish begins to slam against the roof top. . .the kids!! I yell out, Sit down, guys! Sit down! But it's too late, there they came running into our arms. The girls a bit nervous, my boy just flat out scared and in tears.

Great is the LORD in Zion;
he is exalted over all the nations. . . .

We calm down as the earth stops shaking. We count our blessings and are thankful that we are safe. Sure, a few things fell and broke, but we are safe. We talk to family members and friends, near and far, and praise God that we are safe.

Let them praise Your great and awesome Name—
He is holy. -Psalm 99: 1-3

Reactions to Homeschooling

"You're homeschooling?!"

"Oh my gosh, you're taking your kids out of school?

I can't believe that!"

"Homeschooled children just don't do well in society.

I'm just telling you this because I'm concerned."

"What about socialization?

Their social skills will be lacking!"

"How do you know that you can teach your own children?"

"Oh wow! That's great,

but let me tell you about such-and-such

and the horrible experience she had and

why she just couldn't homeschool any more."

"So you mean you'll be with your kids all day long?"

"I mean, if that's what you want to choose,

 I'll support you."

"As an educator, I seriously would not

 recommend homeschooling.

Your kids attend a great school."

I am well aware that what I've shared is certainly nothing new among homeschooling families. It happens all the time, right? All of you "veteran" homeschoolers out there told me that this would happen, so I was well-prepared!! Even so, I find it interesting and quite amazing that those who are unfamiliar with homeschooling have the same types of responses.

Now, I must say, that I have received great support and encouragement along the way. Not everyone responds in utter shock and disbelief and I am glad about that!

Welcome to homeschooling, huh? :)

Ohhh, It's Too Hot!!

My goodness! I don't know about you all, my dear friends, but where I am, it is just downright, scorching hot. The temperatures are 103 degrees or higher--and that is in the shade. . .which of course puts the heat index at 115-120!! The normal high temps are usually around 88 degrees or so.

I'm struggling to go get the mail or the newspaper without coming back in the house just drenched. My poor kids aren't getting to spend that much needed time to run and play outside. And even my little furry friends (our dogs) have been limited to 5 minute bouts--no more than 10--to go outside before they're called back in.

So, with all of that said, I am so thankful for the air conditioner. I know that may sound silly to some, but I am so thankful. Normally, Husband and I try to keep costs low by using fans to cool the most frequented areas of our home. But this week, the fans just weren't getting the job done.

I know that I can survive without the air conditioner. Actually, in some ways it can be considered a luxury, but it is one simple pleasure that I am truly grateful for.

Stay cool!

Thank God, He Forgives

Forgive me Father, for the times when I didn't let my light shine as brightly as it could have, for times when I wasn't salt on this earth as You instructed, for times when I was swayed, persuaded, peer-pressured, all because I didn't stand up for the Truth You placed in my heart. For times when I encouraged others to live for You, yet my words and my actions betrayed You, for times when I knew exactly what I was doing was wrong, yet I chose to do it any way, for times too many to count when I didn't bring Your Holy Name the glory it deserved, when I grieved the sweet, precious, Holy Spirit. Forgive me for my days of unwise choices, unwise decisions that I chalked up to "just being young," times when I thought I was too good, untouchable . . .

Help me to know that no matter where I am, no matter what I say or do, the moment that I identify myself with You, people begin to watch. They watch for my mistakes, my failures, my short-comings, they watch for my responses in tough situations, they watch for the way I deal with sin in my life, someone is always watching. . .Not because I'm perfect or because I've figured it all out, or because I'm the one to watch, but because people want to know You, dear Lord, and how they should live as a follower of Christ . . .

I thank You for the trials, the heartache, the mistakes, the pain, the tears that made me stronger, wiser, and more forgiving. I thank You for allowing me to reach the place that I'm in now--I'm not perfect, I still need Your help, I can't make it on my own--but I get that now. . . that place of getting it now--thank You. Just a little wisdom goes so far. When I look back over my life, and where You've brought me from, I can't help but give You the praise. . .

It is my prayer that You please continue to mold me, shape me, use me for Your service. I know You don't expect perfection--thank You for that. But what You do want is one that is willing and Lord, here I am. Help me to live a life that is pleasing to You, one that brings honor to Your Holy Name. . .

"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men."

-Matthew 5:13

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

-Matthew 5:16

"For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You."

-Psalm 86:5

A Passover Dinner?

Me and SJ (summer 2010)

So, I was reading about the Passover to my children yesterday and how it commemorates the events leading up to the Israelites' exodus out of Egypt (Exodus 12).

SJ looks up and says, "Wait a minute; are we Jewish?!" I told her no and went on to explain how Hebrew/Jewish culture is found in the Bible.

A bit disappointed, she said, "Oh. I wanted to celebrate a Passover dinner, too!"

LOL!! It can be so hard to maintain composure and a straight face sometimes! My kids CRACK ME UP!

I guess I'll have to learn to cook lamb and unleavened bread!

A Mentoring Session of Sorts

I spent a good chunk of time listening and learning today.

I went to a friend's home; she's a homeschooling mama. One day soon, I will be, too.

We laughed, we chatted, we shared. I listened and listened some more.

I even took notes and borrowed a few materials.

Logistics, schedules, tough days, great days, projects, library, curriculum, computers, math, Bible, reading, science, friends, support groups, not-so supportive groups, discipline, programs, college (yikes!), husbands, children, vacations, physical activity, piano, portfolios, field trips, chickens, gardens, etc.

So grateful for the time, so grateful for her willingness to share. Grateful for our kids who shared their moms today by playing so well together.

Feeling a bit renewed, less overwhelmed, questions answered, simply encouraged.

Thank God for wives and mothers, who are busy at home, loving their Lord, their husbands, and their children, but not too busy to take an afternoon to share. (Titus 2:3-5)

Hilarious Bedtime Babblings. . .

Last night, my children had me in stitches!!!

So, I was brushing my girls' hair before bedtime and my 7 year old daughter came up to me and said, "Mom, why did the Israelites have to fight the Philippines--wait a minute, uhm, the Philistines?" LOL!!

After a brief discussion about the consequences a nation faces when they make a mockery of God and His people, the conversation then turned to hawks. (Yes, hawks--don't ask me how!) My 5 year old daughter was trying to figure out if hawks were nocturnal animals. We talked about what nocturnal meant and my thoughts on the matter, although I wasn't completely sure.

My 5 year old said, "Mommy, I think you and Daddy are nocturnal!! Every time we go to bed, you guys are still awake!" LOL

At about this time, my 3 year old comes running from his room calling "Mommy, Mommy!" He had been in bed for about 15 minutes or so. I'm like, "what is it, son?" He said, "Mommy, you closed my door. Now, it's dark in my room and now, I can't see my eyes!!!!" LOL!!!!!!!!!!

(Never mind that he's been going to bed with his door closed for a long time now.)

So, we got him all set up with a night-light which was fine. . . until the night-light cast shadows he was unfamiliar with and then he thought, forget it! Let's go back to the darkness!

Oh, my kids are such a blessing and such sweet comic relief!

'Tis the Season
