"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, being in the form of God,
did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,"
Self relection is good medicine.
Reflecting upon my attitude as a wife, I think there is definitely room for growth. So, I prayed about being meek at heart and I am asking God to help me with this. The answer He gave me was in Philipians. Over and over I heard the prompting of the Holy Spirit, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus" (verse 5). So I asked, Lord, what is the mind of Christ and how does that apply to my marriage? God began to answer my question with verse 6: "who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,"
Do I consider my equality with my Husband as a type of "robbery," something that I should steal from him, something that I'm "getting away with"? My equality with my Husband should not be viewed as something I am competing over or that I covet; it is already there! Remember:
So God created man in His own image;
in the image of God He created him;
male and female He created them. -Genesis 1:28
The equality is already there, especially in the eyes of God. Sure, my Husband and I are very different, with very different God-given roles. Different is not inequality. . who told us wives that it was? (I have a few ideas, but I'll have to save that for another post!) Why did I take on that belief--that if I submit to God's Word by submitting to my Husband that I am somehow unequal? What am I trying to prove to my Husband any time I usurp his authority? That I'm equal to him? That is not the mind of Christ.
Here's a closer look. . .
My Bible's study notes offered the following explantion:
"robbery: Because Christ was God, He did not look on sharing God's nature as robbery, that is, as "a thing to be seized," as though He did not already possess it, or as "a thing to be retained," as though He might lose it.
equal: As used in this verse, this word speaks of equality of existence. Christ was fully God, but He limited Himself in such a way that He could also be completely human. In Christ, God became man."
Quite simply, trying to control things in my marriage in an effort to seize power, gain equality, or to be sure that I am still equal, is not the mind of Christ. God has already made me equal in my existence alone, in my person, in who I am in Christ.
Oh, I thank God for the truth of His Word!!
I have more studying to do (Philippians 2:7-8), more prayers to pray, and more growing ahead. There's nothing like being molded by the Lord!
