Former F1 driver Zanardi takes gold at the Paralympics


The Italian Alessandro Zanardi former Formula 1 driver, on Wednesday won the time trial gold medal in Wheelchair in London 2012 Paralympic Games. Zanardi, who lost both legs in an accident in Germany for a test of ChampCar in 2001, triumphed in the category of H4 in tracing mounted Brands Hatch circuit, where he competed in Formula 3000 for over two decades. The 45-year Italian made a time of 24:50,22 minutes to travel the 16 miles away, which had 27 seconds ahead of Germany's Norbert Mosandl.The bronze went to the 2008 champion, American Oscar Sanchez. Zanardi is one of the most famous athletes competing in the Paralympics in London, ending on Sunday, along with South African double amputee Oscar Pistorius, a few weeks ago was the first disabled athlete to participate in the Olympics, where he reached the semifinals of the 400. The former racing driver in Formula 1 was from 1991 to 1994 and then again in 1999. He started competing in wheelchair in 2007 and in 2011 won the New York Marathon.
